Post Chatroom FAQ -Updated August 2012
Many thanks to Kyxtian for the original FAQ list... which has been updated 22 August 2012

Here's a quick FAQ (frequently asked questions) and answers regarding the Yuvutu chat:

Webcam questions

How do you view webcams?
Click on the webcam icon next to a user's name in the User list.

How do you make the webcam picture bigger?
Move your mouse to the bottom-right corner of the webcam, click on the corner and then drag the mouse to resize.

How many webcams can I view?
You can view up to four webcams simultaneously.

How do I start my webcam?
There is a row of four icons near the top-right corner of the chat room, above the user list. Select the first icon that looks like a webcam. When you move your mouse over it, the tool tip says "Publish my video".

How do I change the source of my audio and video?
In your webcam window, right-click and select "Settings".

You can alter the volume in the webcam window itself

How do I turn my audio or video on or off?
Move your mouse over your webcam window and you will see icons for audio and video display. Click on the icon to disable it, click it again to enable it.

How do I block somebody from watching my webcam?
In your webcam window there is a pull-down list underneath your video that says "Who is watching my video?". Click on this and select the user you want to block, then click the Block button (the "X") next to this list.

Whispers, Private Chat, Private Messages and Instant Messages

WARNING: It is considered impolite to send Whispers or Instant Messages to users who you do not know or do not have permission from the user. Users who do this may find that others will block their communications and complain about the behaviour in the chatroom. If you do not know if it is okay, it is considered polite behavior to ask in the chat room first. Alternately, you may send the user a Private Message, which functions similar to e-mail.

What is the difference between Whispers, Private Messages and Instant Messages?
Whispers are messages that are sent to users inside the main chat window, and appear with the normal flow of conversation. They will start with the name of the user sending the whisper, the name of the user the whisper is being sent to, and the phrase (whisper) next, followed by the message. Whispers cannot be seen by other users.

Private Messages are sent between users who are in the chat, and can be sent between users who are in different rooms who are on each others Buddy list.

Private Chat - you can only use this facility if the other person is on your Chatroom friends list (in the middle tab)and you MUST ask their permission before opening a box or you risk getting muted or possibly kicked from the room for repeatedly opening a box without prior permission

Instant Messages are private messages sent between paid subscribers who have both enabled the Instant Messages feature and who have added each other to their Buddy Lists.

How do I send a Whisper?
Inside the chatroom, click on a user's name and select "Whisper" from the list. In your message composition window at the bottom of the chat, type your message and hit the Enter key or select the "Send" button. When you are finished sending Whispers, uncheck the box that says "Whisper" in the toolbar above the message composition window.

How do I send a Private Message?
You can send a Private Message (PM) by clicking on the Private Message tab at the top of every web page. This will take you away from the chat room and take you to a page where you can enter the name of the user, and then type a brief message, similar to e-mail. To remain in the chat and send a Private Message, you can right-click on the tab and select "Open in New Window" or "Open in New Tab", depending on which feature is available in your web browser.

How do I send an Instant Message?
You must be a paid subscriber to use this function. For more information visit this link:
http://www.yuvutu.com/modules.php?name=YuSubscribe

The user must be on your Yuvutu Friend's List. Click on the "Who's Online" link at the top right and corner of the web page. A window will pop-up with a list of your friends who have set themselves to appear online. Click on the "Send an IM" link next to their name. Another pop-up window will appear. The other user will see a pop-up message asksing them to approve or decline the IM request. If they approve the request, the window will open and a message displays saying that the user is connecting. When the two users are connected, you will see a message that says "You can now begin to chat." You can then start communicating with the other user.

How can I disable Whispers?

You cannot disable Whispers - all you can do is ask people NOT to whisper you or choose to ignore any that are sent to you.. failing which, you cn use the "Ignore" feature and then not communicate with that chatter at all

How can I disable Private Messages?
You are not able to disable Private Messages, as they are a basic part of the Yuvutu system as a whole and is required so that you receive direct communication from the Yuvutu administrators. However, you do not have to read any of the messages and you can delete any and all messages with or without reading them.

How can I disable Instant Messages?
Click on the "Your Account" link on the top-right corner of the web page, then select the "Site Settings" tab. On the option "Hide my online status" select the "Yes" button. You will no longer be visible to other users via the "Who's Online" link.

Chatroom Controls

How do I turn the chatroom beeps and sounds off?
There is a row of four icons near the top-right corner of the chat room, above the user list. Select the icon that looks like a spanner/wrench. you can enable select sounds by clicking on the "Options" link at the top of the chatroom, then clicking on UNtick the sound option and choose if you wish to hear them or not

How do I view user profiles?
Click on the user's name, then select "FullProfile".

How do I block or ignore another user?
Click on the user's name, then select "Ignore."

How do I unblock someone I accidentally blocked?
Click on the user's name, then select "Unblock." The user has to be logged into the chat room to unban them.

Can I change the order of the user list by name, gender, time online or webcam status?
Yes ... just above the list of chatters names, there is a little blue icon, looks like a flower/snowflake. Click on that and you can choose in which order the chatters are displayed foryou

Can I see what users are in other rooms?
Only if they are in your chatroom friends list

Is there an idle time-out if I am not participating in the chatroom?
At this time there is not an idle time-out if you are not participating in the chat room. However, please note that if a moderator or administrator notices that you are gone for a long period of time, and the chat room is full, the moderator or administrator may kick you out of the chat room in order to make room for active participants.

Will I be kicked out of chat if I am ***** at my computer or on my webcam?
Users who fall ***** at their computers or while on webcam are not participating in the chatroom. If you know you are going to sleep, please log out of the chat room so that other users may participate, and so that other users do not feel that you are ignoring them because you are not awake to read their messages. Users who are identified by moderators or administrators as being ***** or otherwise not at their computer actively participating in the chat are usually kicked outfor their own "protection" (noone wants others to hear them snoring or other such things when *****)

Hey! How come I was kicked out? What does a kick out mean? How long does it last?
A user may be kicked out of a room for a variety of reasons by a moderator or administrator. When you are kicked out of a room, you are removed from that specific room for a period of 15 minutes. During that time you may choose to participate in another room. After the 15 minute period, you may be able to join the room again as long as the room is not full. Repeated kick-outs may lead to a temporary or permanent ban if it is due to repeated violations of chat room rules.

Hey! How come I was muted? What does muted mean? How long does it last?
A user is muted when they break the rules regarding communications. If a user types the same phrase more than four times (for example, an individual spamming a link or trying to get attention) will automatically be muted by the chatroom system. Moderators may also select to mute a user after repeated warnings for breaking rules. A mute lasts approximately30 seconds and is automatically removed after that time period. Repeated mutings can lead to a user being kicked out of a room or banned from the chatroom system by a moderator.

Mutes are usually used for infractions of room rules.... i.e.

You must speak the language of the room ... English in english straight room, French in the French room etc
Don't type in capital letters - in a Chatroom environment... its considered shouting, therefore rude
Repeatedly directing people on cam or harassing them with requests to"View my Cam" - "come into private chat with me" or trying to get them out of chat into Instant Messengers like MSN/ Yahoo, Skype etc

Hey! How come I was banned? What does a ban mean? How long does it last?
A user may be banned by a moderator when they break the rules of the chatroom after at least one warning. The type of ban you receive depends on the behavior. A ban means that the user is not permitted to be in the chatroom until the ban expires, but the user can continue to access other features of Yuvutu. When you are banned you will see information regarding the ban, including which moderator banned you, for how long the ban will last, and what the infraction was. After this time period has expired, you can return to the chat room.

Users who break the following rules will automatically receive a permanent ban without reconsideration:
1. Users who are under the age of 21 (this is a site-wide restriction)
2. Users who spam the chat room with links to other web sites
3. Users who appear to be engaging in chi.ld pornography or bes.tiality, including having chil.dren and animals on web cams or objects associated with them and are using them in a sexual manner . You are also not allowed to have your chil.dren HEARD on cam
4. Users who display individuals who do not consent to having their image broadcast
5. Users who display individuals who are under the age of 21, even with their consent
6. Users who display videos of other people who did not give consent to broadcast their videos
7. Users who have repeatedly been banned for other issues.

I have an issue with a moderator or administrator's actions against me or somebody else. How do I address this?

The wrong way to address the issue is to argue about it in the chat room or the forums. Nobody likes to see personal issues between users, administrators or moderators, and such actions may lead to a permanent ban from the chat room until an administrator decides to lift the ban.

There are several ways to properly address any issues that you come across in the chat room.

1. Talk to the individual moderator in private. A calm and rational discussion either via Whispers or Private Messages is the preferred way to resolve issues. Often times a moderator will take action after several repeated attempts to ask users to follow chatroom rules or a moderator's instructions. After discussing the issue with the moderator, the moderator may decide to reverse their decision. If it is not possible for them to reverse the actions (for example, a user was banned from the chat room for a period of time), then the moderator will advise you of your options. Often times actions that a moderator takes are only temporary and will expire after a short period of time.

2. Talk with another moderator if you do not feel that you are able to resolve your issue with the moderator who performed the action, or if that moderator is not communicating or has left the chat room. Moderators are here to help foster good communications and can act as a mediator between you and other moderators, and may also be able to reverse actions that a previous moderator enacted if it is warranted.

3. Send a message to the Administrators if you cannot communicate with any moderator or do not feel that they will fairly address your issues. Click on the "Feedback" link at the top of every web page to send a message directly to the Administrators. Please use a calm and rational tone when describing your situation to the Administrators. The Administrators are the final authority when it comes to all actions taken by the moderators. An administrator will return your message either via e-mail or by Private Message, and will attempt to resolve any issues that you may have, or explain to you why a particular action was taken. Administrators are quite busy, so they may be slow in responding to you. Please only use this option after you have exhausted the other avenues of resolving your issue.

Thanks! Really good to read about the Whispers etiquette, had been wondering for a while the right/wrong way to use the feature.

Is it possible to have one-on-one chats on cam? Is that how IM works? I was asked through messenger but didnt know how to set it up?!

Thanks for your help and advice - I'm fairly new to the site and trying to learn as much as possible!!

:D

Yes.. you can have one to one chat and cam... but the etiquette there is that you MUST ask the other person before sending a private chat box to them

You have to add them as a chatroom friend... then go to the centre tasb where your chatroom friends are listed and double click on their name... that will then open the private chat box... you can chat and cam together there.
